The city of Chelsea is in favor of a resolution to support ALDOT's efforts to relieve congestion on Highway 280. Chelsea residents say it's about time!
Jackie Branch travels Highway 280 everyday from Chelsea to Birmingham.
"On a good day or a bad day? On a good day, hour 15 on a bad day it can take over two hours," Branch says.
She's not the only one. Thousands of cars roll down the stretch of congested highway daily.
"I hate it, I get to the place where I will take 65 to avoid 280, go way out of my way just because."
ALDOT's elevated highway proposal is making it's way to surrounding cities. They are either for the proposal or against. Tuesday evening it was Chelsea's turn.
The city of Chelsea votes in favor of ALDOT's resolution saying it will benefit the future of the city.
"If we don't, my grandkids are going to be talking about let's do something for highway 280," Mayor Niven says.
But Birmingham isn't as supportive, Chelsea Mayor Earl Niven hopes Birmingham will think again.
"I'm hoping they will reconsider and see that this highway is going to have two ends, it's going to take people from Chelsea to Birmingham and then let them come home."
Chelsea citizens and city council members seem to be in complete support of the elevated highway proposal, saying something has to be done.
