Trying To Alleviate 280 Traffic Nightmare

Published March 12, 2010 at 3:52 a.m.
Whether you live, work, or shop down Highway 280 we all face the same problem. Traffic! Now, local and state governments are driving home a solution.

Hoover and Birmingham mayors listened intently to a possible elevated highway and toll road project. But, it isn't cheap.

There saying its 800 million dollars it's more than everyone in all of Jefferson County can afford, this has to be a state project.

That's why the cities of Birmingham, Hoover, Vestavia Hills and Homewood must all agree on the new construction.

"We've been getting mixed information from a lot of our businesses and we've got to sort that out," says Birmingham Mayor William Bell.

Businesses and residents along Highway 280 are Mayor Bell and Petelos's greatest concern.

"I feel like they caused the problem and now they've come up with a solution that they think is a solution, and I think they have a two hour problem that they're turning into a 24 hour nightmare," says Homewood resident Angela Comfort.

However, everyone does agree something has to be done to alleviate 280 traffic headaches.

Survey work continues along 280, but construction will not begin until all four cities agree on the project.
