Simple Ways To Fight Thanksgiving Flab

Published Nov. 26, 2009 at 1:09 a.m.
From turkey to stuffing to pecan pie, by the time you've cleaned your plate, you've already scarfed down thousands of calories. But as CBS42's Kim Carapucci explains, there are simple ways to prevent yourself from packing on the pounds.

Dark meat, drippings, and dessert...little indulgences that can cause your waistline to burst.

“When you have all that special food and special people around you, you just sit around and eat,” said Barry Blanton. “Mom puts more and more in front of you always, and encourages you to overeat."

But it's the holidays and no matter how much we try to hold back, we usually don't.

“Everyone loves Thanksgiving. It's one of my favorite holidays and we all know that we're gonna pig out on Thanksgiving,” said Caroline Bundy, Personal Trainer at the Birmingham YMCA.

Bundy is sharing a few tips on how to burn off your inevitable binge.

"To me, one of the best things you can do after a hearty Thanksgiving lunch is to go for a walk. It's not strenuous. There's still plenty of time and you have plenty of breath to be able to talk to all your family members that you may not have seen in sometime,” said Bundy.

After your walk, it's time to build muscle. First, do push-ups to strengthen your arms and chest. Then, try some dips to tone your triceps.

Another move you can do is the basic stationary lunge. By doing at least 10-15 reps on each leg, you'll get a total lower body workout.

These moves will boost your metabolism to burn off calories at a quicker rate.

Now, for the day after...you may still be full, but you can use Black Friday to your advantage!

"If you go someplace like the Summit or to any shopping center, don't worry so much about getting that front row parking place. Park as far away from the shop as you can,” said Bundy.

And if you eat that extra piece of pie, you can always take the stairs to burn some extra calories.

Whatever you do, stay active. If not, your tummy could get a little tubby.
